A design competition for the outdoor space at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh, reinventing the theory of evolution.

Dynamic Earth Charitable Trust is proposing to re-develop part of its outdoor area to create a gallery which re-interprets the theory of evolution in new and imaginative ways.  HERE+NOW was invited to submit a concept proposal for the design of this space, in support of a Round 2 application to the Inspiring Science Fund.

The project involved the re-development of an underused outdoor space to create a fully accessible outdoor learning area that will be thematically linked to the new Evolution Gallery. The brief was to include a geo-sensory garden, which could be used by a range of groups to introduce evolutionary science prior to accessing the new indoor exhibition.

The design took inspiration from the surrounding amphitheatre and architecture, and the geology of Arthur’s Seat by emphasising a visual connection to the wider landscape.   Planting and geo-sensory elements  were incorporated to stimulate all five senses, and to provide teaching aids.
