#SpaceToSit was a design+build project that transformed the public space at the 'Meanwhile' Fountainbridge site with 11 hand-crafted seats - designed, upcycled and built by the community.  Following the closure of the temporary Fountainbridge site these seats have been relocated to other vibrant community land projects around Edinburgh.

During October 2016 we visited the seats in their new homes - a variety of inspiring Edinburgh community garden and arts projects - with a series of three #SpaceToSit cycle or walking tours featuring speakers at each project.

Earlier in the year the Fountainbridge community asked HERE+NOW to facilitate a project which celebrates the last year of 'Meanwhile' activities at this site. To do this we invited local community, interested individuals, and architecture / landscape architecture students to design and then build a seat during a one-day hack with us on 18 June to coincide with the Fountainbridge Canal Festival.

We filled the shared space footpath route with unique and hand built furniture, which has since been taken to other meanwhile community, arts and growing projects across Edinburgh to spread the legacy of the project to benefit other groups around the city, in the same way the Fountainbridge Meanwhile project has inspired new community projects around the city.

We believe in rigorously evaluating the impact of our projects. This helps us communicate the value these can bring to community, local people and their positive impact in enhancing places. You can view the Monitoring & Evaluation report for the #SpaceToSit project here.

STAGE 2:  Cycle and Walking tours of community garden and arts spaces where the #SpaceToSit seats found their home.

The #SpaceToSit project at Fountainbridge builds on the work Liz of HERE+NOW has done whilst tutoring at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), where she was working with a group of students on proposals for the Meanwhile site at Fountainbridge.  The students had been exploring urban regeneration interventions at a detailed scale, but nothing beats getting out into the place and building an intervention to turn ideas into action!

Come and meet some of the people involved in the #SpaceToSit project, and hear from speakers at inspiring community, arts and growing projects around the city. Join us for a FREE walking or cycle tour on Weds 5th, 12th, or 19th October! Book your place here.

Many thanks to City of Edinburgh Council and MyAdventure for supporting this project and its accompanying cycle and walking tours
